Run Run Run

So just over a week ago I ran my first ultramarathon, the Cayuga Trails 50. It was hard but also very fun and I’m happy to say that I finished it (in 10 hours 5 minutes and 51 seconds). The photo above was taken at about mile 23 (of 50) by the nice people at mountainpeakfitness.com. One of the cool features of the race is that it was broadcast live by usl.tv (as it is the USATF national trail championship race). The black band you see on my right wrist in that photo contains a small GPS device (provided by USL) that allowed family/friends to track me live on a map on the website, see when I was going by a camera, etc. – very cool!

The water crossing(s) felt great, actually! Soothed the knees, ankles, and feet.

Yesterday I went for my first run since the big race and brought along a GoPro (mounted on my head). This is the first of a new series of videos I plan on making, documenting good running routes in and around Ithaca, New York.

As it is the first video, it is a little rough. I learned a bit during the process, but I will probably continue to use the head mount for the GoPro because using a chest mount, though more stable, would likely show my arms swinging.

Sorry for the blur/bounce/compression. About the route: I started on the South Hill Rec trail entrance near the elementary school on Hudson street. I then ran 2.8 miles out to the Burns Road trailhead (one medium hill in there, the rest is flat), then doubled back to the Coddington Road trailhead, and returned to the Hudson street trailhead (down the hill) where I began (6.7 miles later).

The 47 minute run (6:59 minute miles) was sped up 5x to shorten it to almost 10 minutes. It’s a great, simple route for all kinds of runners. Trail shoes are not necessary, but could certainly help give you a little grip on the loose gravel (it isn’t a technical route). This trail actually got me back in to running in 2005 (after about 8 years off!). During the school year there are a few more students running/walking/biking (as Ithaca College is less than half a mile from certain parts of the trail).

My goal is to make 2-3 of these videos a month. I might even include a race (the upcoming Twilight 5k or Boilermaker, perhaps?). Some other routes I definitely plan on doing in this runner POV form:

  • Danby Down & Dirty 10/20k route(s)
  • Black Diamond trail from Cass Park to Taughannock
  • Cayuga Waterfront Trail
  • Buttermilk State Park look (lower and upper -section of the CT 50)
  • Treman Old Mill to Underpass (section of the CT 50).
  • Lick Brook to Buttermilk (reversed section of the CT50).
  • Remmington Road/Cayuga Heights/High School loop
The bigger of two water crossings on the Cayuga Trails 50 (and you go through them each four times).
